Convergence of science and religion?

By Dave Adams

Religion and science are parallel paths that will soon converge.

Religion is rooted in emotion, experience and a desire for knowledge. It has attempted through the ages to answer the ultimate questions; how did we come to exist, and what is our individual relationship to the whole of existence?

Although "God" has been molded in the paradigm known to man with some very specific attributes in various belief systems, it, or he, is really a vague answer. Most of what God represents is our own areas of lack of understanding or knowledge.

Yes, "he" is too great to be known....but we still try.

Science on the other hand, examines our existence from the opposite vector. Instead of looking at the unknowns, it explores the tangible. It examines and documents those things that are observable, repeatable and objective.

The convergence is coming in the field of quantum physics and studies of consciousness.

The question of wave/particle duality in the nature of matter could imply that matter is not necessarily a thing as much as it is just information.

Information in absence of an observer may well be considered to be non existent.

Thus consciousness is a requisite for the existence of the universe, and it could be said that consciousness is the equivalent of the soul or spirit, the realm of religion.

I don't know what we will find or become when these parallel paths to truth, science and religion, converge. Both God and ultimate, complete knowledge seem logical ends. Possibly two descriptions representing the same concept?

The work of Charles Berner is interesting for further consideration on this topic. http://www.lilaparadigm.org/

Interesting, thank you for the links to further information. I've always thought that God and science do not contradict each other and that at some point the two will meet.

Meet? Or perhaps seen to be one and the same in some form.

:)

I agree that the convergence is coming in the field of quantum physics and studies of consciousness, its fascinating. When I discuss religion and science in my science classes, I talk about how science is not a belief system, you accept or reject a hypothesis. Religion needs no evidence or proof or facts, its based on fatih, belief. interesting Intel, thanks

That must be tricky! To discuss religion in a science class with all the various and sometimes passionate views on it.

I have a high degree of respect for any religion as it keeps hopes and dreams alive with belief, even if unsupported. Yet I believe that the understanding of things in a rational, experiential way, is a necessary balance. The combination of the two, the middle path, if you will.

I will post some more intel on my favorite consciousness exploration sites and resources.

Thanks for you comments.

Whoa! So if I do not have consciousness, then the Universe ceases to exist not just for me, but for everyone? A startling concept, but insofar as the universe is a construct and each person within is an extension of that construct, it actually makes sense.

Thank you for an thought-provoking intel. I enjoyed it, and look forward to more.
